MABRAcross Front Runners Defend Verge Sport Leaders Jerseys On Series’ Biggest Stage
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 22, 2010 — With over 700 registered riders, DCCX, race #5 in the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, is one of the biggest shows in cyclocross the East Coast will see this year. It is also the battleground for several close Verge Sport MABRAcross leaders jersey competitions.
After looking through the crossresults.com rankings, poring over the crossresults.com race predictor data, and taking into consideration course conditions, weather, barometric pressure, astrology tables and a host of other factors, it’s not hard to conclude that the Masters 1/2/3 race is one to watch closely. Not only are all the top jersey contenders signed up for Sunday’s showdown at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, but the top five are separated by less than 45 points. Although we may not normally ask you to do any math, this one is pretty easy. A win gets you 60 points. That means any one of these top five guys could be pulling on the leader jersey at one of the biggest races they may attend all year.
Kris Auer (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) currently wears the jersey after consistent top finishes in all four BikeReg.com MABRAcross series races. Ron Huebner (Evolution), coming off a victory at Hyattsville CX and a strong showing at Granogue—where in Sunday’s race he finished just ahead of Auer, is only 16 points away from snatching the jersey off the C3 boss’ shoulders. Tied with Huebner for second place is Mike Birner (Ben’s Performance Bikes), who absent a rare subpar showing at the BCA Cyclocross Challenge would most certainly be wearing the jersey today. Randy Root slots in after Birner and teammate Huebner, 42 points behind the winner. Tied with Huebner is Yanni “Big Papa” Papadopoulos who returns to MABRAcross after a big win at the Winchester Apple Harvest Cross. Throw powerhouses Dave Weaver (ALAN) and Blair Saunders (Ben’s Performance Bikes) into the mix and this race is going to be fast and furious as these guys put everything on the line.
The other points competition we want to highlight this week is the Mens 3/4 field, which has turned into a battle between two guys—Sean O’Donnell (TOMS Shoes) and Adam Williams (Winchester Wheelmen)—who should not be long for their category. Current Verge Sport leader jersey wearer Rob Sheffield (NCVC) has already made the leap to the 1/2/3 field to battle it out with the big guns. After two wins and a second place in the 3/4 category, we are certain Rob will fare just fine with the big boys.
O’Donnell and Williams sit 34 points apart from each other and O’Donnell is just two points away from reclaiming the leader’s jersey. Williams, O’Donnell and Sheffield formed a three man group during the Hyattsville CX race that left the field behind. Adam and Sean will most definitely be keeping an eye out for each other and this will certainly produce one of those exciting “race within the race” situations.
Of course, the rider that will make the biggest leap in points—from tenth to around fourth after Sunday’s race—is DCCX co-promoter Matt Donhaue. According to the crossresults.com race predictor, Donahue is destined to win the 3/4 race. We understand that he hasn’t slept or trained much trying to make sure DCCX goes off without a hitch, but that doesn’t matter. Make sure you do Matty a favor and constantly remind him during his race that he is obligated to win.
Also worth noting is the speedy ascent of Laurel Larson (Syn-Fit), who will be racing the elite race after great success in the lower categories. Larsen’s success opens the door for the Women 3 field to battle it out for the top spot.
Finally, the team competition is really starting to hot up. C3-Athletes Serving Athletes currently holds a six point lead over Haymarket/SEAVS, with Adventures For The Cure not too far back in third. For DCCX, a little extra firepower will be rolling into town for the top squads. Dee Dee Winfield, Arley Kemmerer and Wes Schempf stand poised to have strong races for C3. Will the addition of Stephen “Steevo” Cummings to the dynamic duo of Jared Nieters and Joe Dombrowski be enough to give Haymarket the lead? Or is this the breakout race for Adam Driscoll and Pat Blair of AFC? It’s really hard to say. But one thing is certain, it’s going to be a whole lot of fun finding out.
MABRAcross looks forward to the big crowds, frites and cool beverages on Sunday and wishes everybody a hard, fast and safe race. For more information on the series visit MABRAcross.org. For current Verge Sport leaders jersey point totals and team standings visit crossresults.com.

Nieters and Buerkle Extend Winning Streaks At Hyattsville CX
HYATTSVILLE, MD, October 10, 2010 — In its second year, and first in the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, Hyattsville CX exceeded all expectations. Close to 400 racers enjoyed sunny skies, a festival environment, and lung searing, high-octane racing. Magruder Park in Hyattsville, Maryland, once again played host to a course that attracted the Mid-Atlantic’s speed freaks but still had enough tricky twists and turns to give the technical riders an equal shot at glory.
Although Route 1 Velo and Arrow Bicycle organize and promote Hyattsville CX, it could not exist without the support of the city. This race has been embraced by Hyattsville and touted as one of the city’s premier events. Its success is a great example of how sport and local government can benefit each other. In addition, as a result of Hyattsville CX’s success, Route 1 Velo will proudly present a check, expected to be more than $5000, to Special Olympics of Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Before getting to the highlights of the day, Route 1 Velo and Arrow Bicycle would also like to thank all of the racers that stayed late in the afternoon to participate in the parade lap with our Special Olympians. Racers from all categories and most of the elite men’s field participated in the parade lap, a positive memory that will definitely stay with these special athletes.
As for the racing at Hyattsville CX, it was fast. A couple twists and turns added to last year’s course made lap times a bit longer but did not make it hurt any less. Whether the spiral of death has a place on a cyclocross course is good conversation for discussion groups, but there is no doubt that everybody was looking forward to that feature at Hyattsville, if only to catch their breath for a second or two before getting right back on the gas.
In the elite fields Jared Nieters and Patty Buerkle continued their hot streaks, following up wins at last week’s MABRAcross race in Winchester with victories at Hyattsville. Both Buerkle and Nieters led from the gun and did not let up until coming across the line with significant gaps over their competitors. Nieters crossed the line in style giving spectators a clean view of his Verge Sport MABRAcross jersey while striking a convincing Captain Morgan’s pose. Buerkle also showed off the Verge Sport MABRAcross series jersey, but chose against emulating any pop culture icons.
Race favorite Joe Dombrowski suffered an early race mechanical after running into the barrier much to the amazement of the crowd in the Franklin’s Brewery beer garden. The impact bent Dombrowski’s brake post, which took him a minute or so to diagnose. After giving the field around a two minute head start, he finally was up and running again. The Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS rider proceeded to put on a clinic in why you should never quit a race. Coming from dead last and two minutes down, Dombrowski methodically worked his way through the field. At the end of the day, he found himself on the podium in fifth place.
The most exciting race of the day happened in the Mens 3/4 race. Sean O’Donnell (TOMS Shoes p/b Kindhuman Sports) put his Verge Sport MABRAcross jersey on the line against two strong opponents, Rob Sheffield (NCVC) and Adam Williams (Winchester Wheelmen). The trio separated themselves from the field and stayed together until the last lap when O’Donnell and Sheffield were able to distance themselves from Williams. O’Donnell got stuck leading Sheffield through the last couple turns, which left him vulnerable in the wide open sprint. Sheffield took advantage of his second spot and pounced as the riders hit the finishing stretch securing the victory and the Verge Sport leader jersey.

Several Jerseys Up For Grabs In MABRAcross Points Race
WASHINGTON DC, October 8, 2010—The BikeReg.com MABRAcross series is entering its fourth race and many Verge Sport leader jersey races remain too close to call. This Sunday’s Hyattsville CX is an opportunity for those holding on to slim leads in their field to start securing their position. But it is also an opportunity for the pursuers to grab for the golden ring and don the burgundy and white Verge Sport MABRAcross kit.
Perusing the fields on the exclusive crossresults.com MABRAcross points page, on paper it looks like the Men’s 1/2/3 jersey will stay in the hands of Haymarket Bicycle/SEAVS, with current leader Jared Nieters and former leader Joe Dombrowski both signed up for the Hyattsville race. Will possible contenders, like C3-Athletes Serving Athlete’s Sam O’Keefe, show up on race day and make a run for the jersey? Show up Sunday and see for yourself.
Patty Buerkle (Haymarket Bicycles/SEAVS) has a commanding lead over registered racers. It would be easy to slot her in for smooth sailing on Sunday. But does that mean she is a prime target for the upset? And although she may not take the jersey Sunday, a good showing by Elizabeth Harlow (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) makes this women’s elite battle a tight race going forward.
The open elite races at Hyattsville will be fast, furious and worth sticking around for. But the best points battle of the day, could be the men’s masters 1/2/3. This is going to be a battle royale, for sure. Yanni Papadopoulos (ABRT) is not signed up for Hyattsville, which puts his too short leader’s jersey in jeopardy. And Kris Auer (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) won’t be there to capitalize. This puts the race in the hands of three men that battled it out on the same course one year ago. Looking to snatch Big Papa’s jersey are returning Hyattsville CX masters champ Mike Birner (Ben’s Performance Bikes), and Evolution teammates Randy Root and Ron Huebner. These three guys went after it hard last year at Magruder Park and have to be ready to rekindle that fight in 2010. There’s a lot of power in that trio, as well in the rest of the masters elite field, and power is what it is going to take to win at this watt-friendly course.
The men’s 3/4 field is being watched over by the TOMS Shoes duo of Stephen Mull and Sean O’Donnell. O’Donnell has the jersey but Mull and a host of others are knocking at the door. Watch out for the Sheffield, Faber, Williams, Doroshenko posse that will be fast on the heels of the KindHuman Sports duo.
In the Masters 3/4 field David Crouse (Bike Doctor) is going to have to supplement those fine handling skills with a little power if he hopes to hang on to his jersey. A slew of riders, including Schirmer, Bannon, Carrol, Morris and Beatty, sit just off the pace waiting to track down the leader at Magruder Park on Sunday. The women’s cat 3 field is owned right now by Laurel Larsen (Syn Fit). But upstart Lesley Golenor (HPC) has moved up from the Cat 4 field to give the Cat 3 women a run for their money. Will her success continue despite the upgrade or will Larsen roll on unabated?
So that’s how thing shake out to date in the BikeReg.com MABRAcross series. Check crossresults.com often to see where you rank in the battle for the Verge Sport leader’s jersey.

Winchester Apple Harvest Cross Shines In MABRAcross Debut
Haymarket-SEAVS teammates Jared Nieters and Patty Buerkle took top honors in the elite races at the second annual Winchester Apple Harvest Cross, but the true star of the day was the course. The Winchester Wheelmen presented racers with fast off-cambers, wooded dirt trails, fast descents and a leg-breaking climb. Throw in some rolling terrain, a spiral of death, and a couple fast power sections and this course had something for each of the nearly 300 racers that showed up on race day.

Dombrowski and Silliman Dominate Sloppy BCA Cyclocross Challenge
CASCADE, MD, October 2 — Joe Dombrowski (Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS) and Erin Silliman (Fruit66/Artemis) took convincing wins in the elite races at the 2010 Breast Cancer Awareness Cyclocross Challenge presented by Antietam Velo Club. Debuting a new venue, the BikeReg.com MABRAcross series race #2 offered riders sunny skies but a rain-drenched, muddy course. Riders with power and an ability to ride through the slop fared best on the grounds of historic Fort Ritchie in Cascade, Md.
The men’s race followed the same script as last week’s MABRAcross series race. Haymarket’s Jared Nieters attacked early forcing former USA National Champ in short track and marathon MTB, Jeremiah Bishop (Monavie-Cannondale) to chase. Close on Bishop’s wheel was Nieter’s teammate Dombrowski. As soon as Bishop made contact with Nieters, Dombrowski countered and the race was on. Bishop was able to claw his way back to Dombrowski for a lap but with six to go, the elastic snapped and Dombrowski was on his way to a commanding win. Nieters marked Bishop for several laps before putting in his own attack and taking second ahead of Bishop.
In the women’s race, Erin Silliman relied on power gained during the road season to ride everyone in the field off her wheel. Silliman claims to still be figuring out how to ride ‘cross after only competing in a handful of events, but seems to be a fast learner. Chasing hard in the race was Patricia Buerkle (Haymarket Bicyles), who put her road and MTB skills to good use on the muddy sections of the course. MABRAcross points leader Jennifer Maxwell (Van Dessel) held on for third and kept the leaders jersey for another day.
In other racing, Dave Weaver (ALAN) took the top spot in the masters elite race. Laurel Larsen (Syn-Fit Race Team) won the women’s 3 and Stephen Mull took the men’s 3/4. Fred Wittwer (ALAN) won the masters 55+ and John Scott (Team BBC) won the masters 35+ 3/4.
Race #3 of the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series takes place Sunday, October 3 and race #4 is next Sunday in Hyattsville, Md.
